2009

Another season of the Bradfield Gardening Club ended on Tuesday 8th September with a stimulating talk given by Marina Christopher of Phoenix Perennial Plants. The evening had a great atmosphere as it was the end of season party. Marina is one of our favourite nursery owners who has been to the Club meetings on many occasions to sell her plants and we were all looking forward to hearing her as a speaker. Her topic was Late Summer Flowers. Marina approaches the business of growing plants from a strong botanical and ecological background and she feels that gardens should provide a haven for beneficial insects as well as being an attractive environment full of interesting plants. She brought with her a fantastic array of nursery plants and buckets full of cut material. Daisy-flowered plants seem to rule the garden at this time of year with asters as the main genus and it was extraordinary what a large range of plants belong to this family. I personally never thought of echinops as an aster! Marina's selection of grasses was choice and made one realise why these plants have become so popular with contemporary garden designers. I think some of us particularly enjoyed Marina's hands-on presentation with live plants. As one long-standing Club member said to me “You can just see how the individual plants would look in your own garden”.

The party was, as always, an enjoyable way to get together, talk and exchange news. Many thanks to everyone who produced the food. Also thank you for filling in the questionnaire which we distributed that evening and beforehand by email. We want to give you an especially super programme for 2010 to mark ten years of the Bradfield Gardening Club.
